The crash took place around 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan., 1, near the corner of Ellsworth Street and Fairfield Avenue when Keith Commerford, 50, of Bridgeport, was allegedly speeding, said Terron Jones, spokesman for the Bridgeport Police Department.
Arriving officials found a two-vehicle crash involving a 2008 Chrysler van, driven by Commerford, and a 2006 Honda CRV driven by a Bridgeport man, also 50, Jones said.
According to police, Commerford was traveling westbound on Fairfield Avenue, at a high rate of speed, when his vehicle crossed the intersection of Fairfield Avenue and Ellsworth Street striking the green Honda CRV.
The van continued westbound, partially mounted the sidewalk in front of the Dunkin' Donuts and came to a stop, police said.
The collision caused the green Honda CRV to partially mount the sidewalk and come to a stop at the northwest corner of the intersection, police said.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.
Bridgeport Fire Department and AMR Ambulance responded to the scene. Drivers of both vehicles were transported to Bridgeport Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.
Commerford sustained non-life threatening injuries. Police said charges are pending.
The deceased driver, also from Bridgeport, has not been identified.
Anyone with additional information, related to the crash, is asked to contact the Bridgeport Police Department's Traffic Division at 203-576-7640.
Note: The Bridgeport Police Department Patrol Division issued Keith Commerford a misdemeanor summons for an unrelated hit-and-run crash that occurred Tuesday, Dec. 31.
